“Ask about Osaka” is worth taking literally: settle the price in writing before you book. One reviewer of Alpha Tours Japan's day, in April 2026, writes that they were collected in Osaka and had to pay JPY 15,000 in cash for the pickup. Another, in July 2026, writes that the guide dropped them in Osaka at the end “for a small cost”. A reviewer of Japan Travel and Tour's day in March 2025 says they were asked for JPY 25,000 more on the day for a pickup at the cruise terminal.
How much of the day the drive takes
Osaka Station to Kyoto Station is 47.3 km by road, about 56 minutes with no traffic (routed November 2026). Each way, then, the drive can take an hour or more of the day. Kansai Holiday counts the drive from Osaka inside the hours you book and recommends its 10-hour option for a start in Osaka. Ask any operator whether its hours start at your Osaka hotel or in Kyoto.
Reviewers do report that it works. A reviewer of Senbon Tours' day in October 2026 writes that the guide met them at their ship in Osaka, and a reviewer of Kansai Holidays’ day in September 2026 that the operator arranged an Osaka pickup on request.
When the train is the better start
If your group is two people and you want a guide rather than a car, take the train to Kyoto and book a walking guide there. JGA's walking tour is from US$208 and City Unscripted's walk from US$64, both for one traveller (checked November 2026); you pay the train from Osaka yourselves. By car or on foot weighs the two, and the price page shows what a party of two to six pays per head.
