Kyoto Private Tour by Car or On Foot?

A private car or a walking guide in Kyoto: the distances by road between the sights, what a car saves and what it cannot, the autumn traffic measures, and which private tour fits each plan.

Updated November 2026

Take a car if your list joins Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari in one day: they are 8 to 15 km apart by road. Walk with a guide if your day stays in the east, in Gion, Higashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera, where the lanes are walked whatever you arrive in. For the first kind of day, Senbon Tours’ Kyoto: Private Full-Day Highlights Tour by Vehicle with Guide is from US$392 for a group of up to 6 (checked November 2026); for the second, a walking guide is priced per person.

Routed by road, November 2026; driving times depend on traffic, which is heavy in the autumn and spring seasons.

The western and southern stretches are where a car earns its price. Between Gion, Kiyomizu-dera and Nishiki Market the distances are short enough to walk with a guide.

What a car cannot do

The lanes up to Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, and the streets of Gion are walked; a car drops you at the edge. Even Senbon Tours’ car day lists a “Guided walking tour” among its inclusions and a walk at Fushimi Inari, so bring shoes for it.

In autumn 2026 Kyoto City plans to run its Kiyomizu-zaka tourist car park by reservation only from 7 October to 10 December, and to put one-way and pedestrian-only controls on roads in Arashiyama on 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 November (Kyoto City autumn 2026 plan, dated 17 September 2026, with all dates marked as planned; checked November 2026). On those days a driver may drop you further from the sights.

What walking costs that a car does not

On a walking tour the trains, buses and taxis are yours. JGA asks you to have yen on hand for transport. EE tour's ten-stop day on Viator, which goes by train and taxi, lists taxis at JPY 7,000 to 9,000 a cab for all the rides, and two cabs for a party of four or more.

A walking day also covers less ground. JGA plans, on average, 2 to 3 places on its 4-hour tour, 3 to 4 on 6 hours and 4 to 6 on 8. A car day such as Senbon Tours’ lists five stops in 8 hours across the whole city.

Who should walk

  • A party of one or two with time. The walking tours are priced per person, from US$64 on City Unscripted's walk and US$208 on JGA's, for one traveller (checked November 2026).
  • A day in the east only. Gion, Higashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera fit a 4-hour walk.
  • Not for everyone. LAMBDA CUBE LLC's personalised tour, on foot and public transport, is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with a low level of fitness. For a wheelchair, Alpha Tours Japan's car day is marked wheelchair accessible.

4, 6 or 8 hours helps pick the length, and the price page what each party pays.
