Kyoto Private Tour in Autumn and Spring

A private tour of Kyoto in cherry-blossom or autumn-leaf season: the Japan Meteorological Agency's average dates, the city's autumn traffic plan, crowds, and booking ahead. Checked November 2026.

Updated November 2026

Kyoto’s two busy seasons are cherry blossom, around late March and early April, and autumn leaves, which the Japan Meteorological Agency’s averages put in late November and early December, and a private car with a guide is a good way through them: you choose the start time and change the order when a place is packed. Book as soon as your dates are firm. Senbon Tours’ Kyoto: Private Full-Day Highlights Tour by Vehicle with Guide is from US$392 for a group of up to 6 (checked November 2026), and on 27 March 2027, one of the dates we read, its one option cost US$460.64 for the group (checked November 2026).

Cherry blossom: the average dates

The Japan Meteorological Agency’s Kyoto office watches one standard cherry tree. Its 1991-2020 average puts the first blossom on 26 March and full bloom on 4 April. In 2026 the tree flowered on 23 March and reached full bloom on 30 March (JMA Kyoto, checked November 2026). The agency stopped issuing blossom forecasts from 2010 (JMA, checked November 2026); forecasts now come from private weather companies.

So a private day in the last week of March or the first week of April has the best chance of blossom, and that is the week everyone else picks.

Autumn leaves: the average dates

The same office records the maple turning red on 5 December and the ginkgo turning yellow on 24 November, on average (1991-2020); in 2025 the dates were 10 December and 25 November (JMA Kyoto, checked November 2026). Those are single trees at the observatory in the city, not the temples, so treat them as a guide to the season rather than a date for any one garden.

The city’s autumn traffic plan

Map of Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera and Gion in the east, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in the west, Kinkaku-ji in the north-west, Kyoto Station and Fushimi Inari Taisha to the south
The autumn traffic plan touches Kiyomizu-dera in the east and Arashiyama in the west, at opposite ends of a private day.

Kyoto City’s plan for autumn 2026 runs its Kiyomizu-zaka tourist car park by reservation only from 7 October to 10 December, and puts one-way and pedestrian-only controls on roads in Arashiyama on 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 November (Kyoto City, plan dated 17 September 2026, all dates marked as planned; checked November 2026). On those days a car drops you further from Kiyomizu-dera and the Arashiyama sights, and some walking is certain.

Sanjusangen-do moves to winter hours from 16 November, 9:00 to 16:00 with the last ticket at 15:30, and says it holds no night opening this year (Sanjusangen-do, checked November 2026).

Starting early, and when not to

A private day lets you start at the hour you want: Senbon Tours’ option started at 8:00, 9:00 or 10:00 AM on the dates we read, and Alpha Tours Japan's standard option at 8:00 AM. Early is not always enough. One April 2026 reviewer of Alpha Tours Japan’s day found Kyoto so crowded that they ended the 8:30 start two hours early and missed the bamboo forest. Tell the guide which places matter most, and let them reorder the day.
