Updated November 2026

Book 8 hours by car if you want the sights in the west, the east and the south in one day; 4 to 6 hours on foot if you want a few places in one part of the city. Senbon Tours’ Kyoto: Private Full-Day Highlights Tour by Vehicle with Guide lists five stops in 8 hours, from US$392 for a group of up to 6 (checked November 2026). On foot, JGA plans 2 to 3 places in 4 hours, 3 to 4 in 6 and 4 to 6 in 8, on average.

From the listings, checked November 2026.

By car, the time goes on the far-apart stretches: Kinkaku-ji to Togetsukyo Bridge at Arashiyama is 8.0 km by road, Fushimi Inari to Kinkaku-ji 11.6 km. On foot the time goes on trains and on walking the lanes, which is why JGA plans fewer places per hour.

When the sights open and close

Map of Kyoto: Kinkaku-ji in the north-west, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in the west, Nishiki Market, Gion and Kiyomizu-dera by the Kamo River, Kyoto Station and Fushimi Inari Taisha to the south
An 8-hour day by car can join the west, the east and the south; a 4-hour walk usually keeps to one of them.

A long day has to fit inside the temples’ hours, and several close in the late afternoon:

SightHoursAdult entry
Kinkaku-ji9:00 to 17:00, every dayJPY 500
Ginkaku-ji8:30 to 17:00 from March to November; 9:00 to 16:30 from December to FebruaryJPY 1,000
Sanjusangen-do9:00 to 16:00 from 16 November to 31 March, last ticket 15:30JPY 600
Tenryu-ji8:30 to 17:00JPY 500 for the garden
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji9:00 to 16:00; closed Wednesdays and SaturdaysJPY 1,000

Each site’s own page, checked November 2026.

So in winter, put Sanjusangen-do and Ginkaku-ji before mid-afternoon. Fushimi Inari’s own pages do not print the hours of its grounds; ask your guide when to go.
