Which Kyoto Private Tour?
A private tour of Kyoto is a day with your own guide, either with a car or on foot with trains and taxis, and the car days are priced per group, not per person. The one to book first is Senbon Tours’ Kyoto: Private Full-Day Highlights Tour by Vehicle with Guide, from US$392 for a group of up to 6 (checked November 2026). It runs 8 hours with hotel pickup in Kyoto, lists Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, lunch at Nishiki Market, Gion and Fushimi Inari, and lets you change the plan. On the three dates we read, its one option cost US$460.64 for the group (checked November 2026); entrance fees and food are extra.

What a Private Day Buys, and What It Costs
The four kinds of private tour, Senbon Tours' day stop by stop, the price per group, the reviews, and the distances between the sights.
Four kinds of private tour

“Private” on a Kyoto tour listing means only your group comes. What else comes with it differs a great deal: a Kyoto private guide who walks the sights with you, a Kyoto private driver who takes you between them, or both.
| Kind of day | Who is with you | How you move | How it is priced | One to look at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A car with a guide | A guide, and a vehicle with a driver | Door to door | One price per group, often up to 6 | Senbon Tours’ day; Alpha Tours Japan's day |
| A car with a driver | An English-speaking driver | Door to door | Per group or per vehicle | Kansai Holiday's day by vehicle, on its driver options |
| On foot with a guide | A guide | Walking, trains, buses, taxis | Per person, or a ladder by party size | JGA's walking tour; City Unscripted's walk |
| A fixed route by train and taxi | A guide | Trains and taxis | Per person by party size | EE tour's ten-stop day |
GetYourGuide and Viator listings, checked November 2026.
The car days suit the far-apart sights: Kinkaku-ji in the north-west, Arashiyama in the west and Fushimi Inari in the south. The walking days suit a party that wants two to six places in depth and a guide who plans the trains.
Senbon Tours’ day, stop by stop
The itinerary lists five stops: Arashiyama for photos and a visit, Kinkaku-ji with a guided visit, an hour of free time at Nishiki Market for lunch, a guided visit in Gion, and a walk at Fushimi Inari Taisha. The description adds options around them: Togetsukyo Bridge and the Tenryu-ji garden at Arashiyama, Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (closed on Wednesdays and Saturdays), the Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka lanes and the Yasaka Pagoda near Gion, and Kiyomizu-dera if you want it. Sanjusangen-do or Ginkaku-ji can replace a stop.
On the three dates we read the day started at 8:00, 9:00 or 10:00 AM, with pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Kyoto; for Osaka or Kobe, ask Senbon Tours before you book. The guide speaks English. The vehicle type is not stated. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What one price covers
Senbon Tours’ calendar shows the from-price of US$392 for the group. The option we found on 27 November 2026, 20 January and 27 March 2027 cost US$460.64 for up to 6 people, taxes and fees included (checked November 2026). Split six ways that is about US$77 each; for two it is about US$230 each.
That buys the guide, the vehicle and the driving. Entrance tickets are not in it. Kinkaku-ji charges adults JPY 500 (Kinkaku-ji’s own page, checked November 2026), and Sanjusangen-do JPY 600, adding that a guide who enters alone pays too (Sanjusangen-do’s own page, checked November 2026). The price page sets this day against walking guides, driver-only days and party-size ladders.
Private guide or private driver: what the reviews say
Senbon Tours’ day has 231 reviews on GetYourGuide, from 19 January to 8 November 2026, and we read them all: 217 give five stars and 5 give three or fewer. Two of those five say it was a driver rather than a guide, one of them that the driver did not go into most temples. Many of the five-star reviews name a guide who explained the sites.
The complaint is louder on some other car days. Of the 350 newest reviews of Japan Travel and Tour's highlights day (23 November 2024 to 31 October 2026), 47 give three stars or fewer, and at least 15 of them say they got a driver, not a guide. Guide or driver shows the listing words to look for.
Getting between the sights

By road, Kyoto Station is 3.9 km from Fushimi Inari, 8.2 km from Kinkaku-ji and 9.6 km from Togetsukyo Bridge at Arashiyama. Kinkaku-ji to Togetsukyo is 8.0 km, and Fushimi Inari to Kinkaku-ji 11.6 km. Gion and Nishiki Market are 1.1 km apart by road. Those are the stretches a car saves; the lanes around Kiyomizu-dera and Gion are walked either way. By car or on foot works through the trade.

Kyoto Private Tour: Questions
Which private tour, what it costs per group, guide or driver, licensed guides, Osaka pickup, how long, entrance fees and booking ahead.
For a first day that links the far-apart sights, Senbon Tours' Private Full-Day Highlights Tour by Vehicle with Guide, from US$392 for a group of up to 6 (checked November 2026). It runs 8 hours with hotel pickup in Kyoto and lists Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, Nishiki Market, Gion and Fushimi Inari. For the same kind of day with a Lexus option, Alpha Tours Japan's day is from US$400 for up to 6. To walk with a guide instead, JGA's walking tour is from US$208 for one traveller.
A full day by car with a guide or a driver-guide is priced per group: from US$340 to US$429 for up to 6 on the GetYourGuide days carded on this site (checked November 2026). On the dates we read, Senbon Tours' option cost US$460.64 for the group and Alpha Tours Japan's US$441.71 to US$457.49 (checked November 2026). Walking guides are priced per person: JGA's from US$208, City Unscripted's from US$64. Entrance fees are extra. See the Kyoto private tour price.
It depends on the tour, and reviewers say so. Some car days come with a guide, some with an English-speaking driver: Kansai Holiday's day sells options with a driver for transport and basic help, which is not a licensed guide service. On Senbon Tours' day, 2 of the 231 reviews we read (January to November 2026) say they got a driver rather than a guide; 217 give five stars. See guide or driver.
No licence is needed to guide for pay in Japan since 4 January 2018; only the title is reserved. The Japan Tourism Agency's page (in Japanese) says people without the national or regional guide-interpreter qualification may guide for a fee but may not use those titles or similar names (checked November 2026). Where a listing says licensed, that is its own word: ask the operator which qualification the guide holds.
Some include it, some charge for it. Kansai Holidays' day includes pickup from Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Kyoto. Kansai Holiday's day by vehicle adds JPY 5,000 per vehicle for an Osaka hotel. Senbon Tours' day includes hotel pickup in Kyoto and asks you to enquire about Osaka or Kobe. See a private tour from Osaka.
Eight hours for the far-apart sights by car; four to six on foot. JGA's walking tour plans, on average, 2 to 3 places on its 4-hour tour, 3 to 4 on 6 hours and 4 to 6 on 8. Car days such as Senbon Tours' run 8 hours; Kansai Holiday's sells 5 or 10. See 4, 6 or 8 hours.
Usually not. They are excluded on Senbon Tours' day, Alpha Tours Japan's and JGA's walking tour. Kinkaku-ji charges adults JPY 500 (Kinkaku-ji, checked November 2026), Sanjusangen-do JPY 600 and Ginkaku-ji JPY 1,000 (each temple's own page, checked November 2026).
On most, yes. Senbon Tours' and Alpha Tours Japan's days are customisable within the day. Kansai Holiday's asks for route changes through GetYourGuide messages at least 24 hours ahead. A few fixed-route days do not allow it: EE tour's ten-stop day on Viator keeps its route, lunch place and start.
As soon as your dates are firm, especially for late March and early April or November. Every GetYourGuide tour here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. JGA's booking stands only once a guide accepts it, and it refunds in full if none is available. See autumn and spring.
